
Peru announced on Monday that it was officially severing all diplomatic ties with Mexico following the asylum granted by the mission in Lima to former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez. The Peruvian government has decided today to break diplomatic relations with Mexico, Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela stressed.

Former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez was arrested Tuesday in connection with the Dec. 7 coup d'état staged by then-President Pedro Castillo Terrones, it was reported. Peru's National Police (PNP) arrested Chávez at her home in the southern city of Tacna after the Supreme Court ordered her pre-trial detention for 18 months.

Culture Minister Betssy Chávez Chino was chosen by Peru's President Pedro Castillo Terrones to become the country's new Prime Minister (President of the Council of Ministers) following Aíbal Torres' resignation Thursday after Congress refused to approve a motion of confidence.
