Nicaraguan opposition leader Cristiana Chamorro Barrios was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison for “money laundering, property and assets laundering, misappropriation and improper retention, abusive management, and ideological falsehood,” it was reported in Managua.
Nicaragua's Judiciary Friday ruled in favour of starting criminal proceedings against three presidential candidates as well as other opposition politicians for “treason against the fatherland” and for undermining the country's sovereignty, it was announced.
The Government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega continued with its arresting spree against opposition leaders over the weekend despite international condemnation against that type of practices. The arrests bring to 12 the number of opponents detained since June 2.
