The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) expects to reestablish commercial air links with Chile early next July, and with Brazil in November in time for the tourist high season, plus the humanitarian flights for the Argentine next of kin of the combatants buried at the Argentine military cemetery in Darwin.
The Argentine government announced on Sunday that all is ready for the two humanitarian charter flights, with an Argentine flagged carrier, to transport Falklands-Malvinas foreign residents that have been stranded in the Islands since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) confirmed on Friday that in effect it has held conversations with the UK government about the possibility of putting on a charter flight for South American members of our community to visit family and friends during the festive season.
Britain allegedly thanked Argentina for its offer of two humanitarian flights so that Falkland Islands residents could visit relatives, mainly in Chile, or for other reasons during the holidays season, but the UK also recalled that air links with the Islands are the exclusive responsibility of the Falklands' elected government.
Despite denying a recent air trip from Montevideo to the Falkland Islands, the Argentine foreign ministry stated that the “humanitarian flights policy” for the Islanders stands, and said that last Friday a flight from the Islands to Chile, with health risk patients, crossing Argentine space had been approved.
