    Magallanes with first elected governor wants to freeze or relocate concessions for news salmon farms

    Governor Jorge Flies is a surgeon and family doctor, elected last May with 42% of the vote, twenty points ahead of his runner up

    Next Thursday Magallanes Region will be living a historic event, for the first time an elected governor will be taking office in Punta Arenas. Until now it was the central government, Santiago that appointed the official, but since the political and social reforms that emerged from the 2019/20 upheavals including the current assembly to draft a new constitution, things have changed in Chile particularly exposing the fragility of the so-called “Chilean model”. And in Magallanes, an issue outstands, salmon farming in maritime spaces.

    Magallanes has its first democratically elected governor in 178 years

    Dr. Flies first governor-elect has vast experience in political office

    Next 14th July the southernmost region of Chile, Magallanes and (Chilean) Antarctica, will inaugurate its first democratically elected governor in 178 years. This is the result of the sweeping reforms the Chilean electorate voted on Sunday, particularly for members of a constitutional assembly which will have the task of drafting a new constitution to replace the one inherited from dictator General Augusto Pinochet from 1980.
