    UK strikes deal to join major free trade bloc in Asia-Pacific, including Chile, Peru and Mexico

    CPTPP membership will complement and reinforce existing bilateral trade agreements UK have already signed, including those with Chile, Mexico and Peru.

    The UK announced on 31 March the conclusion of trade talks with member countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a vast free trade area spanning the Asia-Pacific, after 21 months of negotiations. The bloc is home to over 500 million people and will have a total GDP of £11 trillion once the UK joins.

    Applications for UK Chevening Scholarships are open in Chile

    The British embassy in Santiago has announced that applications for United Kingdom Chevening Scholarship for the 2023/24 academic year opened on August 2 until November first 2022, via chevening.org.apply

    Louise De Sousa is the new British Ambassador to Chile

    Ambassador De Sousa joined the Diplomatic Service in 1991, most recently serving as British Ambassador to Tunisia, from 2016 to 2020

    Ambassador Mrs. Louise De Sousa will lead the British Embassy’s efforts further strengthening ties and co-operation between the United Kingdom and Chile. Ambassador De Sousa’s priorities will focus on UK and Chile co-operation responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and a clean, resilient global economic recovery; promoting meaningful action to tackle climate change in the lead-up to the COP26 climate conference; and further strengthening trade and prosperity between the UK and Chile. The ambassador’s work will also include defence and security co-operation, science and innovation, educational and cultural links, and gender equality, reflecting UK global priorities.

    Mrs Louise de Sousa appointed UK Ambassador to Chile

    Mrs Louise de Sousa has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Chile in succession to Mr Jamie Bowden CMG OBE MVO. Mrs de Sousa will take up her appointment in February 2021. She is married to Allan Rivail de Sousa and they have two children.
