    Law Professor Manuel García-Mansilla resigned from Argentina’s Supreme Court of Justice on Monday after just 39 days on his bench, following the Senate’s rejection of his nomination (51 against, 20 in favor), in addition to a controversial ruling from a lower court barring him from signing resolutions.

    Argentine Senate gives thumbs down to Milei's Supreme Court nominees

    García-Mansilla must now decide whether to stay until Nov. 30 or pack up

    Argentina's Upper House Thursday gave its thumbs down to the two candidates President Javier Milei had nominated to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court (CSJN). While Manuel García-Mansilla has already been sworn in for the duration of the current Legislature as per a presidential decree, Ariel Lijo chose not to follow suit because he was not granted unpaid leave as the magistrate in charge of the Buenos Aires City Federal Court # 4.

    Milei criticized for his choices for the Supreme Court

    Lijo is said to have strong political ties to secure the Senate's nod

    Argentine President Javier Milei took heavy flak Thursday after signing a decree Wednesday whereby he nominated Buenos Aires City Federal Judge Ariel Lijo to fill the Supreme Court (CSJN) vacancy left by Justice Elena Highton de Nolasco when she retired in 2021. The head of state also singled out Manuel García-Mansilla to take over from sitting Justice Juan Carlos Maqueda who will be reaching the mandatory retirement age later this year.
