French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his country's solidarity with Greenland on Sunday in light of US President Donald Trump's ambitions regarding the Danish territory. He stopped there en route to the G7 Summit in Canada alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. Macron also said he spoke on behalf of the European Union (EU).

The United States could probably have bought Greenland from Denmark in 1917 (when it did buy the U.S. Virgin Islands from the Danes), but he’s a century too late now.
President Donald Trump's reported wish to buy Greenland may have been rejected by Denmark, but it underscores the rapidly rising value of the massive, ice-covered island due to global warming and to China's drive for an Arctic presence.
