The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) Tuesday expressed its concern over the future of free speech in Costa Rica following the attacks of the Government of President Rodrigo Chaves against La Nación, which included administrative actions against the newspaper one of the companies owning it.
Despite his dubious past at the World Bank, Rodrigo Chaves has been sworn in as the new President of Costa Rica during a ceremony at the Legislative Assembly, which was attended by Spain's King Felipe VI among other dignitaries.
Costa Rica's Supreme Electoral Court Sunday confirmed Rodrigo Chaves of the Social Democratic Progress Party had won the Presidential elections with 52.9 % of the votes, against José María Figueres' 47.11%.
Former Costa Rican President José María Figueres of the National Liberation Party (center-right) Figueres won Sunday's first round of this year's elections but failed to secure a decisive majority, due to which he will need to take on former Finance Minister Rodrigo Chaves, of the Democratic Social Progress party (center) at the April 3 runoff.
