  Discovery Building, a milestone for Rothera Base and BAS in Antarctica

  

  The 2025/2026 Antarctic season is a landmark for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and its Antarctic Infrastructure Modernization Project (AIMP), as the new Discovery Building begins to take on its operational role. Specialist teams will be on site from this month to check the building’s critical systems are working as expected and to carefully manage the removal of six older structures, the functions of which are now integrated within the Discovery Building.

  “Ticket to Antarctica,” Fleet of BAS airplanes heading from Canada to Rothera research station

  

  The fleet of British Antarctic Survey, BAS, aircraft have taken off on their annual ‘ferry flights’ from Canada, in preparation for a new season of science in Antarctica. The BAS fleet of aircraft is now flying the thousands of miles to the UK’s Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula – a vast journey that is broken down across 11 stops over the North and South American continents, including Falkland Islands.

  BAS autonomous drone, Windracers ULTRA, to survey Antarctica at lower cost and lower carbon footprint

  

  A team have arrived at Rothera Research Station, ready to start testing the new Windracers ULTRA autonomous drone in Antarctica. If successful, the new drone platform could represent a major addition to British Antarctic Survey’s scientific capability on the frozen continent – offering the potential to do more science at a lower cost, with a lower carbon footprint than traditional crewed aviation.

  British Antarctic Survey field season has finished; RRS Sir Attenborough returns to UK after seven months 

  

  RRS Sir David Attenborough departed Rothera Research Station for the final time earlier in May and is now making its way back to the UK, marking the end of the BAS Antarctic summer field season.

  Falklands: Stanley airport again winter home for BAS aircraft

  

  Aeroplane spotters in the Falklands will once again have the opportunity to temporarily witness the once familiar sight of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Twin Otter sitting on the Stanley Airport tarmac.

  BAS gearing for the Antarctic season: Halley station to reopen and modernization of Rothera to continue

  

  Science and support teams from British Antarctic Survey (BAS) are gearing up for the start of the Antarctic summer field season. The first Twin Otter aircraft have arrived at Rothera Research Station, preparations are being made to reopen Halley Research Station, and the next construction phases of a major program to modernize Rothera and the islands stations are set to begin.
