  Fed raises the benchmark interest rate 75 basis points, fourth time running

  

  For the fourth time running since March the United States Federal Reserve on Wednesday increased benchmark interest rates 75 basis points to its highest level since 2018, in yet another significant effort to contain inflation which is running at a forty-year high of 9,1%, but at the same time avoiding a recession.

  US consumer prices rose at their fastest pace in three years in April as energy prices climbed, figures show. The Labor Department's Consumer Price Index rose 0.4% last month, the biggest one-month increase since February 2013.

  The US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday, but downplayed global economic headwinds and left the door open to tightening monetary policy at its next meeting in December.
