    Oil prices climbing on prospects of a stimulus deal to help US economy

    U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 49 cents to US$41.71 a barrel, while Brent crude futures were up 40 cents, at US$44.80 a barrel.

    Oil prices climbed in early trade on Monday, clawing back over half of Friday's losses, on hopes for a stimulus deal to shore up the U.S. economic recovery and a pledge from Iraq to deepen its crude oil supply cuts.

    The trajectory and health of the global economy has moved to the top of the list in terms of variables exerting influence on oil prices

    Oil prices regained more ground on Wednesday, pushed higher after equity markets rebounded from an initial selloff at the start of 2019 trading. The price gains are not entirely convincing. WTI and Brent posted strong gains, each up more than 3 per cent by midday in New York, but come largely after U.S. equity markets shook off an earlier bout of pessimism.
