St Helenian Citizens Suspicious about Passports.
It has been reported in the Daily Telegraph that citizens of St Helena are becoming suspicious that the British Government will not fulfil its commitment made in a White Paper last year to grant them UK passports. They took their case to the UN on July 10 and according to the article, in a desperate bid for recognition, they have offered to pay for Baroness Scotland, or any minister, to visit them.
Canon Nicholas Turner, a spokesman for St Helena is quoted as saying "The White Paper told us the Government would listen to everything we had to say, but as well as passports, we need a proper economic base. If a minister would only come and visit us, they'd see how desperate we are, but the Foreign and Commonwealth Office just patronises us."
An FCO spokesman told the paper "St Helena is miles away and very difficult to get to, Baroness Scotland does know about the invitation, but it wouldn't be fair to suggest she's going to visit them. No other minister can go instead. Its Baroness Scotland's responsibility."
New PA for His ExcellencyReplacement to Val Porter, who was the Personal Assistant to His Excellency the Governor, Mr Donald Lamont, arrived on the Tri-Star yesterday.
Tina Deldefloges arrived with her husband and two young children. She was previously working in Brunei.
