Councillor Sharon Halford has said she does not think that the Government has been too ambitious with their capital works projects. She also does not feel that many of these projects are over budgeted or delayed. Speaking today about the new FIDF building she said this went from the basic design stage to the award of contract in one stage without going through all the usual procedures. She said that the Government wanted to go ahead with that particular project quickly and that it was very unfair to say it was over budget. Of the time factor of various capital works projects she said people should consider how long the abattoir has taken to come to fruition under the control of the Falkland Islands Development Corporation. Councillor Halford further added that she believes the government does have the capability to carry out the works they undertake.

A Little Piece of England' described as ?affectionate'

Former FIG Chief Executive, Andrew Gurr, who has written a book about his time in the Falkland Islands, said that there were two main reasons for writing ?A Little Piece of England'. The first, inspired by friends, was to tell people about the Falklands, as he said his friends love to hear about the islands. And although there are books about the islands, his second reason was to tell people about what it is really like to live here, rather than just informing the tourist about the wildlife, tourism or the war. He said the book has already been described as ?affectionate' and is ?confident that it will reveal the islands to be the charming and interesting place that it really is. The publication date for the book is on the 3rd of May, and anyone who would like to read the review of ?A Little Piece of England' can do so on www.amazon.co.uk.
