The establishment of a fish processing plant and freezer on West Falkland in the near future will offer those living in the area the chance of an alternative income. Simon Hardcastle and Pete Gilding representing Falklands Fresh and Golden Touza visited Port Howard last week in a joint company venture to raise interest. They are keen to employ the services of people in camp to catch mullet for Falklands Fresh. Until now due to the limited time scale for catching and processing, this has only been a feasible option for the East. The site is yet to be decided and fishing trials will commence in the next couple of months where catches will be weighed and measured. Records of tides and conditions will be taken and fish will be tagged. People from Hill Cove, Chartres, Fox Bay, Manybranch and Bold Cove as well as Port Howard residents attended the session. Peter Gilding said they guarantee buying all mullet caught and will pay 20 pence a kilo for fish, which meet the required standard. Licensing and requirement information is available from Simon Hardcastle or Ian Doherty at the Falklands Fresh offices in Atlantic House. Councillor's Bill Luxton and Norma Edwards were also present at Port Howard, as were Richard Baker, General Manager of FIDC and Mandy McLeod from the Department of Agriculture.
