Governors Conference Begins Today

The Governor of the Falkland Islands, Mr Donald Lamont, is attending the 3rd Annual Overseas Territories Governors Conference, which begins today in London. It was established after the publication of the White Paper, which set out a renewed contract between the United Kingdom and Overseas Territories in 1999. Said to provide an opportunity to look at progress and build on those foundations laid down by the White Paper, it will allow Governors to discuss topics such as good governance, constitutional modernisation, management of the public, prison and police services, human rights and the control of illegal immigration. Officials from various Whitehall departments will participate in the conference, providing an opportunity to engage their resources and expertise on behalf of the territories. The event, which will run until Friday, was opened by Baroness Scotland who will chair a number of the sessions. She is the minister with responsibility for the Overseas Territories and a recent visitor to the Falklands.

Falkland Islands Artist Interviewed

An interview with Falkland Island artist James Peck, in the Buenos Aires Herald newspaper on Sunday reports that for him every work is autobiographical, saying "My ancestry is fundamental in the themes of my paintings. The Islands are where my heritage lies, and I often paint imaginary scenes in which people of former generations appear." He told Christine Castro Gache, the articles author that each painting is a reason to discover something, and to learn about himself. The piece further focuses on the influences, which have affected James' style, such as the Falklands War and focuses on his childhood.
