FIG Representative leaves on the Tri-star

The Falkland Islands Government Representative in the UK, Sukey Cameron left the islands on the tri-star today. Her visit coincided with the budget week and she was able to meet with many heads of department, Councillors and the Chief Executive, she also came in to FIBS for a One to One interview which was broadcast last week. Sukey said her stay had been very useful and enjoyable and that she looked forward to returning to the Falklands again soon.

Goose Green Liberation Day.

A moving ceremony was held yesterday for the liberation of Goose Green which happened on the 29th May 1982 and to remember and thank those who lost their lives. There was a large turn out of both Falkland Islanders and the military with His Excellency the Governor and commander of British Forces attending. The service began with hymns and prayers jointly undertaken by Reverend Alistair McHaffie and Service Chaplain Jonathan Beach. The names of those who laid their lives were remembered, Lt Col Jones, Captains Dent and Wood, Lts Barry and Numm, Colour Sargeant Finlay, Corporals Hardman, Prior, Melia, and Sullivan, Lance Cpls Smith, Bingley and Cork. Privates Dixon, Fletcher, Holman-Smith, Illingsworth, Mechan, Parr, Slough and Budha Pussard Limbu. Wreaths were then laid followed by a lament, Silence and reveille. Brook Hardcastle gave an emotional description of the day saying how 115 people had been kept in the recreational hall and that they'd lost something very dear to them ? their freedom to decide their own destiny'. Adding how when members of two Para knocked on the door to tell them they could go home there was an overwhelming relief in the first instance followed by sadness that their release had cost the lives of the people they were remembering. The Governor thanked June McMullen for organising the day and for June and Tony who will be retiring from Goose Green in the near future.
