Sea Lion Island and Bertha's Beach are confirmed Ramsar ?Wetlands of International Importance'

Sea Lion Island and Bertha's Beach in the Falkland Islands, one of the UK's most dynamic Overseas Terrorities, have fulfilled stringent criteria to be designated for the Ramsar ?List of Wetlands of International Importance'.

This result is a major achievement for the Falkland Islands Government in their policy to preserve and protect the unique natural environment in the Islands. It is greatly welcomed by Falklands Conservation, the local conservation charity and the major force driving through this process.

A spokesperson for Falkland Islands Government comments: "We are delighted that two wetland areas in the Falkland Islands have been recognised as having such international importance. Preserving and protecting our unique environment is central to Falkland Islands Government policy. We initiated this endorsement and support the work of Falklands Conservation to secure these and other sites in the future."

The sites were formally submitted on Monday, September 24, 2001 by the European Wildlife Division of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in Bristol.
