BBC Holiday Programme in Falklands

An edition of the BBC Holiday programme is to be recorded in the Falklands. It will be broadcast to coincide with the 20th Anniversary commemorations. Presenter, Craig Doyle, who took over from Jill Dando following her murder is due to arrive on Saturday. Director Phil Smith is already in the Islands and has been to Port Howard and Sea Lion Island. Thursday he met with Conservation Officer Becky Ingham and Tourism Representative Jo Morrison. Friday he will go on a Stanley Harbour launch trip accompanied by Tourism Director John Fowler. Cameraman Graham Banks was previously in the Islands in the early 90's when he filmed the Ungentlemanly Act.

Vigilance When Opening Mail

Anthrax attacks world-wide have led to the Chief Executive instructing the public to be vigilant when opening mail. He said that anyone suspicious about a package should not open it, but should call the police for guidance. He said it should be placed in a plastic bag if possible. Police will then carry out a risk assessment. Suspect packages can be removed safely by the Fire service. At this stage the Post Office will not be screening mail. But postal workers will wear gloves to sort it. Dr Blanch also said that "normal precautions in the Islands for those opening mail, would be to exercise good sense, for instance do you know who the package is from and are you expecting it?" He has urged people to ?Examine or feel unopened letters for foreign bodies or powder'. The guidelines say ?Do not open letters with your hands but use a letter opener and open them with minimal movement to avoid spilling any contents. And that suspect packages could include those with suspicious or threatening messages, improper spelling of common names or places, oily stains, lopsided or discoloured packaging or having a strange odour. He has emphasised that the Falklands is a low risk country.
