The dispute over Gibraltar's future has intensified as Gibraltarians boycotted talks in Barcelona between Britain and Spain to try to resolve the 300-year-old dispute over sovereignty. Gibraltarians held a demonstration in protest.

This Monday Argentina sets off the first stage of the bonds swap operation addressed to lower interest payments with an expected 2,5 billion US dollars saving in 2002 and avoid defaulting on foreign loans.

World faces recession.
The International Monetary Fund lowered the world's growth estimate for this year to just 2,4%, which many economists consider a recession since it's below 2,5%.

No “fast track” this year
US Congress Democrat Senate leader Tom Daschle confirmed this week in Washington that legislation giving the Executive power to negotiate new trade deals without the threat of congressional amendments, (“fast track”) will not be approved this year.

A General Election will be held in the Falklands on 22 November.
While sovereignty discussions are out, several candidates have recognized the need to talk with Argentina, on items of mutual benefit. Among the 'new' candidates, Ian Hansen, a farmer on West Falklands told the electorate, 'It is probably in our benefit to converse with other countries, including Argentina, on the issue of conservation. However I would be against any form of direct trade or air/sea link with Argentina until their false claim to our Islands is dropped'.
