Full article

The Royal Navy assault ship HMS Fearless which played a vital role in landing British troops to recapture the Falkland Islands, is to be withdrawn from service after arriving back in Britain on March 18th from active operations in the Arabian Sea.

In nearly 37 years of distinguished service, Fearless played a high profile role in numerous deployments, ranging from landing the amphibious assault troops at San Carlos in the Falklands in 1982, to hosting diplomatic negotiations over the future of Rhodesia in 1968.

Most recently, she moved straight from the highly successful joint exercise with the Omani Armed Forces, Saif Sareea II (Arabic for "Swift Sword") in September/October 2001, to active operations in the Coalition against terrorism following the September 11th atrocities in the United States.

He retirement has been brought forward several months because of her age and the costly maintenance needed to keep her in service. Her new replacement, HMS Albion, will enter service in January 2003.
