There are tentative plans for the Duke of York, who fought in the Falklands war as a Royal Navy helicopter pilot to visit Argentina, Chile and Uruguay when he travels to the South Atlantic in November.

His itinerary has yet to be finalised and confirmed.

He is spending about a week in the Falkland Islands when about two-hundred 1982 veterans from the South Atlantic Medal Association (SAMA) are making a nostalgic 20th anniversary pilgrimage, welcomed as guests of grateful Islanders. He has previously visited Latin America as a roving ambassador for United Kingdom international trade.

A number of other British veterans have visited Argentina and met the Argentines they fought in 1982. They include the chairman of SAMA, Captain Rick Jolly, who commanded the emergency field hospital at Ajax Bay, saving the lives of all the wounded treated there, both British and Argentine.

The secretary of SAMA, former paratrooper Denzil Connick, who lost a leg in Argentine shelling, has also met Argentine veterans as has Simon Weston, the Welsh guardsman severely burned in the bombing of Sir Galahad.
