The Shackleton Scholarship Fund (SSF) has a new honorary treasurer, Mr Brian Hill. He takes over the accounts from Sir Rex Hunt, who remains on the London Committee of the Fund.
Mr Hill already looks after the accounts of the Falkland Islands Trust, the charity which overseas the SSF. His appointment was warmly endorsed by the SSF London Committee headed by former Falklands Governor, Mr David Tatham.
Mr Hill makes up a unique husband and wife team involved in administration of both organisations. His wife, Mrs Penny Hill, has been administrative secretary of the Shackleton Fund for two years.
They spent several years in the Falklands, staying on for four years longer when Mr Hill retired after five years as Director of Public Works. Mrs Hill was a legal secretary.
Mr and Mrs Hill told Mercopress: "We stayed on because it was a wonderful lifestyle. We spent our time gardening, walking, fishing, and visiting the Camp. There is a special quality in the Falklands way of life, which we shall always miss. We look upon our voluntary work now as a debt of gratitude for the wonderful time we enjoyed in the Falklands".
They reluctantly returned to live in Southern England to be nearer their grandchildren. Mr Hill was previously a civil servant in the Department of the Environment and was attached at various times to both the Foreign Office and the Admiralty. He first worked in the Falklands in 1984 for a year helping to maintain the military establishments in the Islands
