The General commanding the emergency military operation in the United Kingdom to replace fire-fighters on strike is a 1982 Falklands War hero ? Lieutenant General John Kiszely.
He won a Military Cross as a major in the Scots Guards during fierce close combat battles on Mount Tumbledown. Now 54, he is Commander of Regional Forces in charge of all non-operational troops in the United Kingdom.
Using service personnel to fight fires and carry out emergency operations in the absence of the striking firemen has caused controversy and a rift between Military Commanders and the Government.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, has warned that diverting thousands of navy, army and air force personnel to fire-fighting duties is damaging morale and disrupting their military training when there is a possibility they could soon be involved in a war with Iraq in support of United Nations' resolutions calling for destruction of weapons of mass destruction.
