Falkland Islands have a new governor. Howard Pearce was sworn in Tuesday morning during a ceremony held in Stanley's Court and Council Chamber that was attended by elected Councillors, government officials and special guests.
During this ceremony the Speaker of the House presented him with the sword which was donated by former Governor Donald Lamont for use by future Governors.
In a short speech Governor Pearce pointed out the privilege of having been nominated to the Falklands, emphasizing the Islands progress and the self confidence, dynamism and achievements of the community.
Governor Pearce then took part in a parade on Ross Road. In the evening a welcome reception was held in the FIDF Club.
An experienced diplomat and fluent in Spanish, the new governor visited the Falklands three times, in 1975, 1976 and 1978 while posted in the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, and this year went for a familiarization visit in advance of taking up his post replacing Mr Donald Lamont.
His last post was as High Commissioner in Malta. Previously he served as Head of Central European Department in the FCO in London, deputy head of personnel, and various posts abroad including Hungary and Kenya. Mr. Pearce also spent a sabbatical year in the United States at Harvard University and was awarded the CVO for his work on the Queen's visit to Hungary.
