St Brandan is to replace the Falkland Islands coastal shipping Tamar FI on May's voyage to Punta Arenas in Chile.

A spokesperson from Island Shipping in Stanley said, "Following successful discussions between the British Ministry of Defence and Island Shipping we are pleased to announce that St Brandan will be undertaking the next international voyage between Punta Arenas and the Falkland Islands, scheduled to sail from the Falklands on May 16."

St Brandan is capable of carrying 18 containers, including two reefers, which will shortly be increased to four.

The vessel also has the ability of carrying bulk and palletised cargo; she is fitted with a twenty tonne crane and has the capacity to ?ro-ro' single heavy items.

As a result of this container carrying capacity Island Shipping says it is able to offer Full Container Load (FCL) Island Shipping says it looks forward to expanding this vital link between the Islands and South America and, "...with the support of local importers, believes it will be able to maintain the competitive rates essential to the business viability of those who use the service."

In related news long term resident of Stanley's port FIPASS, the longliner CFL Pioneer departed its berth last week for the Uruguayan port of Montevideo.

The ship is owned by Consolidated Fisheries Ltd (CFL). In an interview with the Falkland Islands Broadcasting Station last week, Chairman of CFL, Stuart Wallace, said the vessel had turned out not to be successful, "...for a number of reasons."

He added, "We couldn't afford to keep persevering with her so we decided to lay her up and try and sell her.

"We wanted to move her to Montevideo which is more accessible for prospective buyers and it is significantly cheaper than keeping her here."
