The main offices of the Chilean Antarctic Institute in Punta Arenas will be hosting beginning this Thursday a show of original photographs taken by Australian artist Frank Hurley during the Sir Ernest Shackleton Antarctic odyssey between 1914 and 1916.

The show recalls the sufferings of the Shackleton expedition on board the "Endurance" finally trapped and crushed by Antarctic ice.

Seven boxes with 65 pictures and several maps arrived over a week ago in Punta Arenas and should be ready for the inauguration July 8.

Before arriving in Punta Arenas the show was mounted in Santiago's National Historic Museum with the auspices of the Australian Embassy and the Chilean Antarctic Institute.

While in Santiago, Jose Retamales, Director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute suggested to the Australians that the pictures also be shown in Punta Arenas given its close links to Antarctica and the Shackleton expedition.

Apparently according to the Chilean press one of the objectives of the exhibition is to show Australia's century long presence in Antarctica.

The show will remain in Punta Arenas until July 16 and can be visited at the Chilean Antarctic Institute offices between 09:00 and 20:30 hours.
