When she left the Falkland Islands weekly, Penguin News, to run the Falkland Islands Broadcasting Station (FIBS) in 2003, former Managing Editor Lisa Riddell was following in the footsteps of the previous Director, veteran broadcaster, Steve Johnston.

Despite the fact that Steve joined the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) and went off to work in the Balkans, Lisa's pursuit did not end there and on Saturday 10th July, she married him in front of the Falkland Islands Registrar and around a hundred friends and relatives gathered at a Stanley restaurant.

Next week the couple will leave the Islands bound for Cyprus, where Steve's next tour of duty will begin. However, it's an open secret that both are hoping that ultimately he will be posted back to the Falklands to run the British Forces radio station at Mount Pleasant.

Lisa's ancestors, Watsons and Gleadells on her father's side and McKays on her mother's, have lived in the Falklands since the 19th century and one of her friends at the ceremony expressed the view that although Steve might take Lisa out of the Falklands, he'll never take the Falklands out of Lisa. Despite having something of a reputation as a shopaholic fashion follower, Lisa, who gained an honors degree in English from the University of Bangor in Wales, is a farmer's daughter and one of the Falklands leading amateur horse racers. It is difficult to imagine that she'll be happy to miss too many Christmas race meetings on the Stanley course.

It's been a busy time for Steve, who returned to the Islands very recently. Aside from getting married and arranging the couple's move to Cyprus, he was recently presented with a medal by the Commander of British Forces in the South Atlantic, Air Commodore Richard Lacey. The Pan Balkan medal, a NATO decoration, was earned by Steve for his services as British Forces Radio station manager in Kosovo from January to June 2004.
