The Bill Hunter-Christie prize for the outstanding Falkland Islands student studying abroad this year (2004) has been awarded to Kerri-Ann Ross, 19-year-old daughter of Glen and Janet Ross of Stanley.

She is in her final year studying for a Child Care and Education Diploma at Chichester College in West Sussex. Like many other Falklands students, she says that after getting her qualifications and work experience, she would "love to go back home to the Islands to work". Her prize was a collection of books about child care.

Nearly all winners have been female students since inauguration of the prize several years ago in memory of the London barrister, Bill Hunter-Christie, a freeman of Stanley, who championed the Falklands cause against Argentine threat for many years.

The prize was presented last Saturday in London by his widow, Mrs Merle Christie, at the annual general meeting of the Falkland Islands Association, of which she is a Vice-President.
