A Place of their own

STANLEY'S teenagers finally have their own venue to hang out in. The Place, located in the former telephone exchange building on Ross Road, was officially opened by Tim Simpson on Wednesday. Before cutting the ribbon, Mrs. Simpson, the Community School's popular art teacher, thanked the many volunteers who had helped to renovate and furnish the building, ready for Stanley's young people to use. She told the gathering of teenagers, "At last you younger people have somewhere to go in your spare time. "We truly hope it will be successful and that you can all enjoy The Place for the foreseeable future. "We have been trying to get you somewhere for some years now so it is good to see that we are finally making a start." Dion Robertson (14) said he felt The Place gives youngsters, "...a chance to meet and talk to people we don't usually mix with." He said he was pleased that, "...finally we've got somewhere for the younger generation to go." David Barton (14), a member of The Place's committee, said the adult members of the committee had been "really good and helpful". He said that in addition to assisting with the practicalities in preparing the building they are now allowing the teenagers to run The Place themselves: "They told us, ?it's your place, and you look after it'."
