Interest in the Falkland Islands was once again high at the annual Boston Seafood Show.
Representatives from three Falklands fishing companies, Consolidated Fisheries Ltd (CFL), Red Back Consultants Ltd and Seafish Ltd, flew to a wintery Boston for the three day event last week.
Janet Robertson of CFL said the event is one of the largest seafood shows in the world and allows participants to, "...forge and cement links with other fishing companies, involved in all aspects of marketing fish around the world."
Mrs. Robertson said while there is always "a huge amount of interest" in the Falklands stand, there was "even more" this year.
She attributed this to a general shortage of fish products around the world: "The shrimp fishery in the Pacific has collapsed due to the tsunami and squid catches seem to be poor all over the world."
An upshot of this is that species caught by Falklands companies such as blue whiting and hoki are generating more interest than previously.
Mrs. Robertson said the Falklands stand - which is sponsored by the Islands' Vessel Owners Association - provides details of species caught and tonnage in and around the islands, "...so people get a clear picture of what we do."
She said the overall aim is to, "...establish our seafood industry in the world. On the whole we're trying to promote the entire industry together - not just as individual companies.(PN)
