Governor goes Top Gun in F3 Tornado jet

GOVERNOR Howard Pearce went "top gun" last month when he was given a flight in an RAF F3 Tornado fighter jet by 1435 Squadron at Mount Pleasant.

Squadron Leader Hoskison first briefed Mr Pearce on all aspects of the aircraft before taking him on an hour long tour of the Islands.

As well as passing by Government house, the Governor was subjected to aerobatics, supersonic speeds and huge ?G' force.

Sqd Ldr Hoskison said, "It was a great privilege to fly the Governor and I believe that he thoroughly enjoyed his flight.

"He was an excellent passenger who was able to stay in good humour throughout this testing flight."

LISTENERS to the Falkland Islands Broadcasting Station will find they are tuned in to a new service from Monday.

The Falkland Islands Radio Service will come into existence next week as the new name of the radio station.

This change marks the hand over of the station from government to the Media Trust, which also has responsibility for Penguin News. To signify the handover, students at the Falkland Islands Community School were asked to design a logo for the new name.

Members of the Media Trust voted for the logo last week and Conrad Francis (16) came up with the winning design, beating off strong competition from Hannah Pointing (12) in second place, and Craig Williams (16) in third.

Corina Bishop, who will become Station Controller as of Monday, was delighted with the designs they received and said, "We were very impressed with both the amount of entries and the quality of them. In total there were nearly a hundred designs submitted.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to Community School Art Teacher Tim Simpson for allowing us to utilise her students for this and also to everyone who submitted designs. Well done Conrad for designing the winning logo and Hannah and Craig for their runner up logos." (PN)
