Fearing inflation pressures Fed raises basic rate to 3,75%
The United States Federal Reserve on Tuesday raised interest rates for the 11th straight time arguing that the effects of Hurricane Katrina for the overall economy will be temporary. The new basic rate now stands at 3,75%, a 25 points increase.

Morales promises legalization of Bolivian coca crops
Bolivian peasant leader Evo Morales who has a comfortable lead in vote preference for next December's presidential race said that if elected he would legalize growing coca which is the raw material for cocaine.

Magallanes and Tasmania in joint Antarctic research
The University of Magallanes has been invited to be part of the International Antarctic Institute, IAI, a world academia organization which will specialize in under and post graduate Antarctic studies and currently has its temporary seat in the University of Tasmania, Hobbart, Australia.

Venezuelan president Chavez campaigns in Hispanic Bronx
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez campaigned during the weekend among Hispanics in New York and ordered his aides to draft a project to clean the waterway in the Bronx.
Chavez made the announcement while visiting a community centre in the Bronx which is dedicated to improving living conditions in the heavily Hispanic neighbourhood. -

Two Argentines lost in Antarctic crevasse
Two Argentines out of a group of five remain lost in an Antarctic crevasse in King George Island, while the other three were rescued on Sunday by a Chilean Air Force helicopter.

Falklands' air bridge TriStars upgraded and painted grey
The Royal Air Force fleet of TriStars has undergone in the last twelve months a series of modifications which significantly enhance the aircrafts operational capability and last September 14 TriStar ZD 951 returned to RAF Brize Norton sporting the fleet's new gloss grey paint scheme.
