Castle remembers Glamorgan

HMS Dumbarton Castle spent the weekend completing her final preparations for passage before sailing to complete important upper-deck maintenance.

The ship sailed, taking with her a six man contingent from HMS Forward Royal Naval Reserve Unit (onboard for their annual training requirement) from Birmingham, including Leading Seaman Christie who served on HMS Glamorgan during the Falklands Conflict in 1982.

Fittingly, Dumbarton Castle was able to stop at the point where Glamorgan was hit by an Exocet on June 12, 1982 claiming the lives of thirteen of her sailors.

Dumbarton Castle held a memorial service on the flight deck to honour the memory of those lost in the attack and Leading Seaman Christie laid a wreath for his colleagues.

Glamorgan was the first ship in history to survive an Exocet attack and was able to return to the Task Force as an operational unit.

Dumbarton Castle is now looking forward to continuing with her settlement visits in the not too distant future.
