Figures recently released by Chile's National Chamber of Commerce and Tourism (CNC) show tourism investment in 2006 to be the highest in five years. Investment last year reached 2.1 billion US dollars, up 4.7% over 2005.
Chile's government, businesses and local communities increasingly view tourism as an effective and reliable source of income, and new hotels, activities and attractions spring up every season. The CNC attributed the increased investment to new casinos being built following a change in gambling legislation which awarded new licenses in many of Chile's regions. Of the total investment, 44% (116.1 million) went on casino-related projects. Hotels the length of the country also made heavy investments, which account for 42.7% of the total investments. The Metropolitan Region received the most investment, with 23% of the money heading towards the country's capital city. By Beatrice Karol Burks The Santiago Times
