Argentina will display a “special emphasis” in the world's multilateral space in defense of the Argentine claim over the Islas Malvinas sovereignty announced on Wednesday designate ambassador before United Nations, Jorge Argüello.

The chairman of the Argentine Congress Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee was convened by the Senate's Agreement's Committee to defend his nomination as the next Argentine ambassador in United Nations. "Regarding the immediate agenda we can advance that the Argentine government will display a special emphasis in the defense of our national interest regarding the Malvinas controversy before United Nations", said Argüello during his thirty minutes with the Senate Committee. "The decision is to advance after the objective of generating the appropriate conditions so that the sovereignty dialogue is implemented as soon as possible", insisted Argüello. "All the diplomatic action of Argentine democracy will be geared towards dialogue on this subject", said Argüello who revealed that the coming meeting of the UN Decolonization Committee or G 24 is scheduled for next June 21. "The Argentine government will make use of every available multilateral space to insist on the sovereignty claim", continued Argüello who recalled that the UN General Assembly of 1965 calling for the resumption of dialogue on the Falkland Islands has been systematically denied by the United Kingdom. Argüello also mentioned the creation last year of the Malvinas Parliamentary Observatory of which he is chairman given his position in the Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee. The job of the Observatory is to complement the Foreign Affairs Ministry and results so far have been encouraging: "a channel of dialogue between the Argentine Congress and the British Parliament" to which the ministry can appeal "when they so wish". Regarding the overall focus of Argentine foreign policy Argüello underlined active policies against terrorism and money laundering. "But I also feel that a new emphasis will be needed regarding an issue with growing momentum and strength in the UN, --and in the context of world security-- which is the environment debate" pointed out Argüello. However the two main lines of action of Argentine foreign policy continue to be in support of the "process of regional integration" and the "strengthening of multilateral spaces". "Argentina has understood that in a globalized world there's no room for our country if we run on our own", said the ambassador designate who praised the fact that Argentina has "a very active and recognized participation in the United Nations peace keeping operations".
