Shrimp exports totalled 15,119 at a value of USD 95.5 million in the first five months this year Shrimp exports totalled 15,119 at a value of USD 95.5 million in the first five months this year

During the first five months of 2007, Argentina exported 214,373 tonnes of fish and shellfish worth 411.3 million US dollars which represents a 20% drop in export volume compared to the same period of 2006, according to statistics from the National Service of Health and Agro-Foods, Senasa.

Even when sales abroad experienced a slight rise in the first months of the year, the weak demand for squid (Illex argentinus), the low price of shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) and fewer shipments of scallops (Zygochlamys patagonica) makes it difficult to expect exports to reach 1.22 billion US dollars as in 2006. Export of common hake was the leading item with 61,135 tonnes, equivalent to 121.4 million US dollars. SENASA statistics also show that in the first five months of this year Argentina exported 15,119 tonnes of shrimp for 95.5 million US dollars and 66,342 tonnes of squid totalling 59.3 million US dollars. Other items include 10,550 tonnes of hoki (Macruronus magellanicus) valued at 17.5 million US dollars; 4,950 tonnes of kingclip (Genypterus blacodes) 16.6 million US dollars and 11,215 tonnes of Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita)valued at 15.6 million US dollars. Other relevant products exported were Patagonia scallops, 2,514 tonnes, 15 million US dollars; Patagonian flounder (Paralichthys patagonicus), 1,837 tonnes and 6.2 million US dollars and whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), 6,423 tonnes worth 5.5 million US dollars. In addition, 3,256 tonnes of short-tailed river stingray (Potamotrygon brachyura) wings were exported valued at 6.1 million US dollars; 2,839 tonnes of South American striped weak fish (Cynoscion striatus) for 5.5 million US dollars and 2,360 tonnes of Brazilian flathead (Percophis brasiliensis), representing 4.9 million US dollars. Spain remains as Argentina's main client for fish and shellfish having purchased 68,380 tonnes worth 145.4 million US dollars in the first five months of 2007. Brazil followed with 22,505 tonnes and 49.1 million US dollars. Italy took 13,528 tonnes valued at 37.9 million US dollars; United States 9,056 tonnes representing 27.2 million US dollars; France 6,877 tonnes and 19.8 million US dollars and Japan 10,370 tonnes for 14.2 million US dollars. Other important destinations were Germany, 5,862 tonnes and 10.9 million US dollars; China 12,188 tonnes and 10.2 million US dollars and Russia 5,764 tonnes for which she paid 8.9 million US dollars.
