Major General Sir Jeremy Moore, who commanded British land forces during the 1982, conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands and died last weekend, will be buried at Wells Cathedral, Somerset, on Friday 5th October.
A Falkland Islands Government spokesman announced today that the Islands will be represented at this occasion by Legislative Councillor, Ian Hansen and London Representative, Sukey Cameron. In a letter sent to Lady Veryan Moore, on behalf of his colleagues in the Falkland Islands Legislative Council, Mike Summers OBE expressed the shock and sadness that had been felt in the Islands at the passing of one he described as "one of the Falklands great heroes". The name of Maj. Gen Sir Jeremy Moore will live long in the memory of all those who experienced the war in the Falkland Islands, and for many generations to come. Whilst this is a time of private grief for you and your family, we feel sure you will draw comfort from the extraordinary life that Sir Jeremy lived, and his achievements on behalf of his country in many parts of the world. Without the skill and tenacity on the ground in the Falklands of Sir Jeremy and the team he built around him, the outcome here would have been even more in doubt. The defeat of the Argentines and the recapture of the Falklands was a remarkable achievement that crowned a remarkable career, and for which we remain eternally grateful. The Falkland Islands Government has opened a book of condolence, for the people of the Falkland Islands to leave their own messages and memories. We will try to get the book to all parts of the Islands for all to join in expressing their thanks for his crucial part in restoring our freedom. We will send it to you when completed. Major General Sir Jeremy Moore is part of Falklands history, and his place of honour is thoroughly deserved. We offer our condolences to you and all your family at this sad time, and if there is anything we can do to be of assistance our office in London is at your disposal.
