Falklands elected Councillors Ian Hansen and Mike Rendell have been pressing the flesh with British politicians at the Labour and Conservative party conferences.
While attending the Labour Party Exhibitors' Reception with the government's UK Representative, Sukey Cameron, they had a chance to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Sukey reported that the Islands were mentioned in the speech given by the General Secretary of the Labour Party, "...who thanked us for being one of the longest standing exhibitors at the Conference, this being our 20th year at the Party Conferences." As for the Prime Minister, Sukey reported, "He thanked us for our support over the years and said he looked forward to seeing us in our 21st year." The Falklands also got a special mention at the Conservative Party Conference this week in Blackpool. In his speech to the Conference The Rt. Hon. William Hague MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, commented, "All of us who visited the Falkland Islands earlier this year, 25 years after their unprovoked invasion, were reminded of what Britain stands for at its best: the right to live in peace, to self-determination, and the upholding of law in the place of tyranny. "And I told the Islanders...that their right to remain British as long as they wish is as safe with the next Conservative government as it surely was with the last one." Penguin News
