A draft Islands Plan 2008-12, setting out the Falkland Islands government's ambitions and promises for the next five years, has been issued for consultation with the community and stakeholders.
The Plan looks for some far reaching outcomes by 2012, and sets out milestones for 2008-10. "As the introduction to the Plan states," said Councillor Mike Summers, Policy Portfolio holder, "none of these promises can be achieved by departments acting alone, and most of the outcomes require everybody – Government, businesses and the community – to do their bit to make the Islands the place we want them to be." The Islands Plan is described as "what we want to see achieved for our society, economy and environment in the medium term; it does not try to set out all that Government does, but follows nine key 'themes'". The Plan is supported by a parallel 5 years Medium Term Financial Plan (MTFP), which identifies funding by redirecting resources within Government's budgets to deliver our promises. The nine key "themes" are: Right to Self Determination:In accordance with the principles set down in the Charter of the United Nations, we will ensure our right to self determination and continuing development of internal self government. Sustainable Economy:We will manage the economy wisely so that all sectors of society can prosper. Education:We will ensure that all residents have the opportunity to develop their abilities and skills through education and training taking into account the needs if society and the resources available. Transport and Communications:we will work to develop infrastructure, particularly transport and communications, to meet the Islands economic and social development. Health:We will promote and maintain a healthy and fit society. Management of Public Services and Finance:We will improve the efficiency of government services and maintain prudent fiscal management. Camp:We will maintain Camp in order to encourage a well populated, economically and socially sustainable community integrated within the national economy. Environment:We will conserve and enhance the natural diversity, ecological processes and heritage of the Falkland Islands in harmony with sustainable economic development. Quality of Life and Community Safety:We will ensure a well-housed, well-served, safe community.
