A Falklands councillor invited to give an opening presentation at a tourism industry infrastructure meeting in Gibraltar will describe the Falklands experience in setting up an industry from nothing.

Councillor Richard Cockwell, who will travel to the annual British Islands Mediterranean Regional Conference early this month along with his colleague Councillor Richard Stevens, told Mercopress,"Many other tourism industries are long established while ours is new. I will be talking generally about Falklands tourism but primarily about what is required to set up a new industry." The meeting is part of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the primary objective of the conference this year is to brief delegates on Gibraltar's approach to dealing with the effects of climate change. The delegations will also explore what strategies and options can be pursued by small territories in relation to: energy conservation and generation; tourism and the environment. In terms of energy conservation the use of wind power has had a great deal of success in the Falklands; many farms now have 24 hour power as a result and the Falkland Islands Government has set up a wind farm near to Stanley that provides a percentage of the town's energy. Councillor Cockwell said, "We are of course also looking forward to meeting old friends to discuss things that effect the Commonwealth but the Falklands in particular. Always at the CPA conferences it is an opportunity to talk about our difficulties with Argentina. Many delegates at other conferences are unaware there is still a problem so it is necessary to spread the words every chance we get." Lisa Johnston - SeAled PR - Stanley
