United States Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas Shannon said Washington will provide information to Latin American countries on the actions of the fourth fleet in Atlantic waters, to ease concerns that erupted after the United States decided to re-activate that fleet.
Shannon, during the last day of his three-day visit to Argentina, said there has been some confusion because of the lack of information, and said the US is attempting to calm those people who are concerned. He alluded to comments made last Thursday by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who told Shannon that she was "worried" about the fleet's operations in the area. Shannon highlighted that the operations are "a tool of peace and security". Shannon visited with United States' Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne the training centre for Peace Operations (CAECOPAZ) of the Argentine army in Campo de Mayo. "The professionalism of Argentina's army is remarkable, as well as the success and ability showed in CAECOPAZ" congratulated Shannon. He also pointed out: "I would like to highlight the relevance of Argentina in peaceful operations". Being inquired on whether he could summarize the outcome of his visit to Argentina, Shannon replied that "it was positive, we had the chance to re-start bilateral consultations, and we signed four agreements. I had the chance to talk to President Fernández de Kirchner and I'm confident both countries (Argentina and the United States) will work together". They reached an agreement on a few areas related to science and technology, renewable energy, education and culture and national parks. Shannon said he had a "special interest" in the conservation of natural resources. He also said that both governments are expected to hold "several annual meetings to discuss human rights issues," claiming some "multilateral institutions will act on this issue". US Ambassador Wayne said he was "satisfied" with the visit to CAECOPAZ and pointed out that the agency "is sending a positive signal from Argentina to the world". He added that the three days Shannon spent in the country were "very productive" and highlighted the "strong ties of cooperation" between both nations. Shannon started his return trip to Washington last night.(BAH)
