FALKLAND Islands port development has taken another step forward with the appointment of a Major Projects Manager.

The Falkland Islands Government today announced the appointment of Ken Johnson, a Chartered Surveyor who has a substantial track record directing major development and regeneration projects involving public-private partnerships in the United Kingdom. These have included the development of the Royal William Yard in Plymouth and Bristol Harbourside development, a £600 million public-private partnership to re-generate 66 acres of Bristol's waterfront. Councillor Richard Cockwell told MercoPress, "Mr Johnson will be expected to provide a draft plan locating and developing a new port. He said, "Subject to it being agreed it is my hope that we have a decision made on the location in the first quarter of 2009." Mr Johnson will be visiting the Islands in mid October prior to taking up his appointment in November. Tim Thorogood, FIG Chief Executive, said "Ken will bring to the Falklands experience of major developments involving public-private partnerships. His expertise will allow the Port project to move firmly forward and it is likely that he will also drive other development projects such as the Historic Dockyard". Ken Johnson said: "'Clearly the Port project is of vital importance to the economic future of the Falklands and I look forward to being able to help to deliver the project for everyone's benefit' The Falkland Islands Government have been looking at four different locations for a modern new port, these comprise the old port facility site in Stanley Harbour, two sites in Port William just outside Stanley Harbour and a site in Berkley Sound to the North of Stanley. Councillor Richard Cockwell indicated however that Mr Johnson would not be confined to only examining these sites saying: "It is purely an open book for him… nothing is ruled out."
