BRITISH politicians are still very aware of what has been described by Falkland Islands' representatives as the economic terrorism, inflicted on the Islanders by Argentina, Councillor Ian Hansen said, speaking from the Labour and Conservative Party Conferences in the United Kingdom.
The Falklands stand had a "good reception" at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester, with visitors such as the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, UK Foreign Office Minister Meg Munn and several other Labour MP's who have had varying degrees of involvement in Falklands' issues. The stand at the Conservative Party Conference was also, "very busy and a prominent stand," said Councillor Hansen. Party leader, David Cameron, and William Hague were some of the visitors who attended, amongst many other Conservative MPs. When asked about Ministers reactions to difficulties faced by the Falklands from Argentina, Mr Hansen said although Falklands' representatives did not intentionally bring the situation up, when Ministers inquired, "?we got the point across about the continued economic pressure from Argentina." Councillor Hansen said other messages put across to Ministers included emphasis that "?the Falklands are still moving on; fishing is still doing well, and with the prospect of oil exploration next year, there was a very upbeat slant about the Falklands". Politicians, Mr Hansen said, were "very positive," with support from both political parties. With regards to whether attending the conferences was a useful exercise, Mr Hansen replied "Definitely, everyone was very interested to know and see people from the Falklands. "It is very important to keep awareness up of the Falklands, and as political parties change, the Falklands need to move with them. "As this is the 21st conference we have attended in a row, people were very impressed. The Falklands have become a permanent fixture," he said. Bernice Hewitt - SeAled PR – Stanley
