Uruguay completed this week the first South American export of live dairy cattle to China. A total of 3.970 Holstein calves and heifers (8 to 18 months old) were shipped for the thirty day journey which will be followed by two month quarantine in mainland China. Read full article

The Uruguayan Official Mission presented, through the Uruguayan Embassy in Beijing, a model of a comprehensive agricultural cooperation agreement between Uruguay and China. A formal response from the Chinese authorities was never obtained. 21 years later a first shipment of live cattle from Uruguay to China is being held. This kind of trade should be completed by the establishment of a joint venture operation. Uruguayan companies, like CONAPROLE - the leading cooperative producer of milk products in Uruguay, and Chinese enterprises could set up in Chinese Provinces, an Uruguayan technology platform for the development of Chinese rural areas. Uruguay has been a leading country in South America in this kind of rural development.
