Spain made a formal complaint to the United Kingdom and the United States over the manner in which the tax information agreement was signed on March 31 between Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Peter Caruana and United States Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner in London ahead of the G20 Leaders Summit.

The event took place at the Churchill Hotel, the base for the US delegation at the G20.

A Sunday report from the Spanish daily ABC revealed that some weeks ago Madrid summoned both the US Embassy chief of business issues Arnold Chacon and the British Ambassador Denise Holt for separate protests.

Spain has made clear it has no objection to the agreements per se but was incensed by the signing taking place before US and Gibraltar flags, given UK’s absence, as if Gibraltar were independent.

Britain insists normal protocol was followed, says the ABC.

Gibraltar has yet to sign almost a dozen similar agreements in the course of this year as world leaders and organisations press for greater transparency in financial issues especially from so called tax havens.
