Previously described as “a night club owner, musician, and notorious party animal” by Foreign Policy magazine, Miguel Piñera is taking steps to establish his career as a musician — conveniently outside the country where his brother is president.
Miguel, more popularly known as “El Negro,” is the jet-set, bohemian younger brother of Chilean president Sebastián Piñera. “El Negro” will participate on the TV show “Dancing for a Dream” (“Bailando por un sueño”) in Argentina, scheduled to debut on April 19.
The president’s brother attended the concert “Argentina hugs Chile” two weeks ago in Buenos Aires and became the next big thing for the Argentine press, calling him the “hippie” brother and asking him for multiple interviews which he reportedly turned down.
“They called me to participate on ‘Dancing for a Dream’, and I accepted,” he said. “I am not a dancer, but I want to take a gamble on it, because my goal is to make my music known in Argentina.”
Miguel admitted that being the president’s brother has its benefits, especially for his musical career: “Now, I’m not ‘papurri’ or ‘el Negro,’ I am ‘the brother of’, and that seems interesting to the Argentines,” he said.
He said that he still has not been able to tell his older brother about his new endeavour: “Sebastián is too busy for me to call him and tell him that I am going to dance on a program. Now I have to send him text messages, and he never answers them.”
Miguel’s move to Buenos Aires also includes a dream that doesn’t involve dancing; he plans to open a pub in the Palermo sector of Buenos Aires.
Recently he told El Mercurio, “You have to understand that we are musicians. Obviously I am bohemian, because all of my pubs are open at night and my job is to sing and entertain people”.
“El Negro” said he is now focusing his energy on getting in shape, walking and jogging. His wife, Belén, a former Argentine model, is helping him with his diet and will move with him for several months to Buenos Aires.
