Jun 25th, 2010 - 08:31 am - Link - Report abuse 0Obama's policies in South America seem to be going well.... wonder what the US people will think?
Jun 25th, 2010 - 08:40 am - Link - Report abuse 0Does Venezuela have the funds for this nationalisation or are they just going to steal the rigs?
Jun 25th, 2010 - 08:57 am - Link - Report abuse 0The Beauty of oil rigs is that they can be moved ... perhaps the Falklands will offer any excess oil profit they have to the great baboon to make up for the economic ineptitude.
Jun 25th, 2010 - 09:28 am - Link - Report abuse 0I wonder if Hugo's really got the balls to do this? On the one hand, the Americans might be satisfied with payments to the full value of the rigs plus the cost of buying/building new ones. On the other hand, the next thing he sees could be an US Navy fleet.
Jun 25th, 2010 - 09:46 am - Link - Report abuse 0@idlehands. I thought nationalisation was just another word for stealing...
Jun 25th, 2010 - 11:15 am - Link - Report abuse 0In my opinion, much depends on how they go about doing it:
Jun 25th, 2010 - 11:35 am - Link - Report abuse 0If they pay the market price (whatever that may be) then they might be able to salvage something, however if they just sieze them then as well as probably looking down the wrong end of the ICJ or a US fleet, there'd be a reasonably good chance that every mobile rig in any private hands would see this as a prescedent that they didn't want to be next to follow, and get themselves towed out of Venezuelan waters forthwith.
well what goes around, comes around, this guy backed Argentina against Britain and threatened to fight the royal navy. lololo
Jun 25th, 2010 - 12:05 pm - Link - Report abuse 0............
will we now see the Argentineans back mr Hugo and offer full Argentinean support to fight the US navy, this i have got to see.
but alas i think. I know] you wont hear a pip squeak out of Argentina,
and they call them selves friends, just goes to prove the south Americans cant support them selves let alone each other olololol
If you nationalise something without paying for it, it's called expropriation.
Jun 25th, 2010 - 02:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What will Hugo do? (bated breath)
What will Cristina do? (sod all).
Venezuela is an independent country, we may agree or not but that is none of our bussiness, Malvinas is, and belong to Argentina. http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs//2010/gacol3212.doc.htm
Jun 25th, 2010 - 06:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I think Hugo will do exactly as he has in other takeovers. Seize the goods, offer a pitiful amount as settlement, reject complaints, take the goods, pay whatever he wants. Argentina will not comment. No military actions will happen from the U.S.

Jun 25th, 2010 - 09:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Malvinas is, and belong to Argentina....
and Argentina was a colony of Spain who was hanging on to the tail shirt of Napoleon,, who Great Britain, beet them both [together]
the spoils of war , go to the winner, [so in fact great Britain has a claim on Argentina,] so the British should then claim Argentina, how about that] sadly we British did not, do not, want Argentina, ....
but the Falklands remain British, and always will as long as they wish it.
Long live great Britain..
(14) - briton...If I remember my history correctly, I believe GB did want Argentina in the early 1800´s. At least, GB invaded it twice and was defeated both times.
Jun 25th, 2010 - 11:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Marco - you need to read that document again (and the previous 43) it doesn't say that Argentina owns the Falkland Islands .... come on, get a grip!

Still pedalling out Gott's old 2007 Guardian article Marco .... now tell me, did you bother to read the comments section under the article. It would give you a clearer understanding of how much support both Gott and the Guardian have on this particular subject.

Just realised that the USA has other options.
Jun 26th, 2010 - 04:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 01. Buy rigs from current owners and ask Hugo whether he wants to try to nationalise US Government property.
2. Same as above, i.e. buy rigs, but then torpedo or missile them.
