The business community in Punta Arenas in the extreme south of Chile has begun to campaign to ensure the cruise industry does not abandon the city and is asking authorities for a radical change in the costs policy, which seems one of the main causes for the current situation. Read full article

“The difference in costs is in the pilots, tugs, signalling and other adjacent services which cruise vessels must pay while sailing along the Chilean fiords.”

The only solution I see for the above is Governmental subsidies to lower the pilotage costs.......
    Any better suggestions?

Chile needs to encourage cruises that don't use Argentine ports. No-one wants to go there!!

I think that the port operation cost are too high and the port service must be faster, the pilots rate also could be lower and the government services must be pro-actives and not regresives as well as the tugs cost are to expensives. All people that work directly in this business must think that is better a low unitary income with a big tourist population than a big unitary incomes with lower tourist population.
They woudn't try to kill the hen of golden eggs......as they do in this moment.
And, in the other hand, the cruisser vessels are interested in sail trough our fiords, channels as well as the Argentinian side of the South Cone, the Antarctic (with no name) and the Falklands with their 4 kind of penguins too. If we could be smart enough we all could get more money on the pockets and more jobs and better lifestyle. What we need is just open the sea path to all peaceful ships, no more, and all of us will result in benefit....
I hope some day we'll learn to act smart without hate. I know that it´s too difficult to governments to take the first step, but we the regular people must encourage them to do so.

Sergio. There are lots of regular, reasonable people around. Falkland Islanders, Brits, Chileans, Uruguayans. Trouble is, there's one country/territory trying to screw it for everyone. Chile and Uruguay can trade with the Falkland Islands all they want, except for Argentina. Chile and Uruguay can be popular cruise ship stops, except for Argentina. Chile and Uruguay could have a share in Falklands oil exploration and revenues, except for Argentina.
Do you notice a common thread?
Trust me. British people will NEVER forget that Argentina tried to steal the Falkland Islands. Or, over the years, what Argentina has done and tried to do to the Islanders.
Figure out the solution for yourself.
