Brazilian economy slows down but still expands at annualized 8.9%

Brazil's economy grew 8.8% in the second quarter compared to the same period a year earlier due to strong domestic investment. The government statistics agency IBGE said Friday that capital spending spiked 26.5% in the April-June period compared to the same period last year.

Argentina’s car industry booming could reach 700.000 units in 2010

Argentina’s August 2010 car output reached 72,967 units, which resulted in a 52.6% rise regarding the same month of last year; sales to dealers totalled 61,599 units, or 44.8% more than in August 2009; and exports amounted to 42,526 units, representing a 45.6% year-on growth, according to the Argentine Automakers Association (ADEFA).

International tourists arrivals up 7% in half year; Asia and Middle East lead

The first six months of 2010 saw international tourist arrivals grow by 7% according to the August Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This result confirms the recovery trend beginning in the last quarter of 2009 and is expected to continue in the second half of the year at a somewhat more moderate rate but with Asia and Middle East continuing to lead.

“Faster than anticipated recovery” for air passenger and cargo traffic says IATA

Demand for international passenger and cargo traffic increased 9.2% and 22.7% respectively in July compared to the same month a year ago, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The year-on-year comparisons for July were less than the June growth data showing 11.6% and 26.6% increases respectively.

Humpback whales in Chilean sanctuaries to be tracked with GPS

Starting December, scientists from Chile’s Biomar Foundation will use GPS (Global Positioning System) to follow the movements of humpback whales in protected marine area Francisco Coloane, in the Magellan Strait. The whales are to be monitored for 12 months.
