Brazil's government will cut 4,2 billion Brazilian Real (approximately 2.4 billion USD) from its 15.17 billion defense budget this year under proposed fiscal tightening, Defense Minister Nelson Jobim announced this week. Read full article
I was thinking about this. I am by no means an expert on Brazilian defence so i could be wrong.
But..Brazil is a large country. Isn't 36 jets rather a small ammount? I would have thought with a jet like the US one, they could get atleast 60 jets for the same price?
I'm speaking just for defence, i understand how the french jet could boost the economy should any other south american nation decide to buy the jets.
You're right, but by reading mercopress, you don't always get the full story. Why, I have no idea. They now have a fleet of 100-110 fighter jets, but they are old. the 36 jets is just the begin. This is a begin deal that will eventually lead to a total of 100-110 fighter jets.
What will close the deal is a strong agreement/guarantee of transfer of all technology what they have from the French, and by following US politics, they might get a stronger deal from the Obama Administration, and incredible from strong supporters of the Republican party like the US Chamber of Commerce and of course BOEING and GE (Obama's best friend and economic adviser Jeffrey Immelt). They will travel with Obama in March this year to Brazil. The mission is clear: Get closer to Brazil and humiliate France softly. I think that Brazil will go eventually with the French and the US ending up empty.
2: Ah i see, well if they're planning on more jets. The french ones are clearly newer and superior to the older US ones they were thinking of buying....Though i wonder why france has so far failed to export it's jet to anyone, they've been trying at every opportunity.
I'd be gobsmacked if they pick the French jet, not only does it offer one of the worst values for money, but is also less capable overall than the F-18 E/F (range of missions, payloads) and the Gripen, which is the cheapest and best value for money, plus its the Jet the air force originally wanted. If the defence budget is being cut, then the French offer seems even worse. Given Brazil's suddenly more agressive stance over the FI's in favour of Argentina, i would doubt the recently proposed British Warship buy's too. Pity i was hoping Rouseff would be less willing to put up with Argentina's crap, but it seems Jobin and jaguaribe's pro Argie, anti British/American stance has already damaged relations in favour of the increasingly irrational Argentina and bonkers Kirchner.
Given Brazil's suddenly more agressive stance over the FI's in favour of Argentina
Huh? what aggressive stance against FI's? Get real, it doesn't exist, because they don't care. It's pure politics.
If the defence budget is being cut, then the French offer seems even worse.
Defense budget cuts has nothing to do with buying the French Rafale Jets, Grippen or the Super Hornets. I'm not an expert, but I think the Rafale or the Super Hornets are great for a nation like Brazil.
i would doubt the recently proposed British Warship buy's too
Based on what do you have doubts that they go for the British warships.
I bet they will deal with the British? Why? They know they are best, for years.
i was hoping Rouseff would be less willing to put up with Argentina's
crap
What that Bulgarian bear is doing is pure business, like yeah yeah Fl's this and that, for the rest it's economics and strategic games. I think don't give a damn at all about that issue, but hey why not be nice with both, Britain and Argentina. If Jobim is anti British/USA, he wouldn't have close relationships with them, but he does. Remember politics is a boring puppet show. Don't listen to them, just watch what they are doing.
The provincial poop heads of the Northern hemisphere believe that, if a Southern country doesn't rush to adulate them and abide to their agenda, that makes it anti-US/Europe or whatever.
The French jet deal comes along with a nuclear sub development deal. The French were made to throw in a lot of specialised training, a lot of engineering and manufacturing expertise, and a complete transfer of technology. No other contender for this sale was willing to give so much.
Brazil is the only Southern Hemisphere country that manufactures and exports war planes, and also the only one that manufactures submarines. Our submarines are diesel however, we need nuclear subs. None of this was priority until Chavez took over half the continent and started threatening our interests and of course until all the oil being tapped now was discovered.
As far as the FIs are concerned, Brazil has conducted its largest ever war games with Britain. The military relationship between the 2 nations has never been closer, except for at the time of our war for independence when Britain helped bomb the crap out of Portuguese boats and troops stationed in Brazil. But unfortunately, this financial crisis has affected both nations' military budgets so it might be a while until we see such close military collaboration and cooperation. War games are very expensive after all.
@3 Red, please don't say things like that. we are all allies & friends now, ne c'est pas. l know you only meant to be witty, but spare the feelings of us Anglo-French.
So, if they don't buy your ships it's Britains gain..Yup Brilliant
of course this is brilliant, a misunderstanding.
the french may well get there, no point in antagonising the french is there, we are suposed to be friends now, ????
